His legendary night Cocoa Butter was groundbreaking in bringing hard soul, jazz, funk, latin and related grooves to inspired audiences for 8 years. He was instrumental in laying the foundations for many clubs to come, with many DJ's, musicians and dancers cutting their teeth at Cocoa Butter. For most of his career, Kano has held down a minimum of 3 weekly residencies for the past 15 years. For six years, Kano ran Str8up - Melbourne's future jazz, freestyle grooves and broken beat institution - on Fridays at Revolver, mixing the sounds of now with the sounds of old school hip hop, funk, boogie and disco alongside a host of local Djs and guest musicians. It was there that Kano also introduced to Melbourne's shores some of the finest international guests like Rainer Truby, Mad Mats and Mark De Clive-Lowe. For 5 years Open Sesame was his global jazz sounds Thursday night at Honkytonks with fellow Other-Worldly Fusions afficiondo Ennio Styles and Melbourne's finest live latin and jazz musicians, dancers and vocalists. The night was with Honkytonks for the club's entire lifespan. On Saturdays he runs the night 'Bust a Nut' at First Floor (now 5 years running strong) with an eclectic mix of beats, hip hop, boogie, funk, whatever feels good, and a weekly queue at the door. Most recently Kano has started 'Patchwork' at Miss Libertines, a freestyle cross over selection of the core of Melbourne's live artists and DJs. He regularly travels interstate and toured Japan in 2000 and again in 2003, playing gigs in Fukuoka, Sendai and Tokyo and played gigs around London in 2004. He has also been a regular at the AFI Awards, Melbourne International Festival, Good Vibrations (since it started), Adelaide Festival of Arts, Big Day Out, Falls Festival and the�Adelaide International Film Festival. Kano began his journey into the addictive world of vinyl collecting in the 80s with a love of ska and reggae. Next came hip hop and from there, his collection soon billowed to include a caboodle of soulful jazzy funky sounds from around the globe. It was ten years ago that the floorboards of his home pulled away from the walls, collapsing under the weight of vinyl. He's since moved to a bigger place and his collection continues to grow. Kano's sets have been heard alongside Jazzanova, United Future Organisation, Gilles Peterson, Mark De Clive-Lowe, Nitin Sawhney, Recloose, Kruder and Dorfmeister, LTJ Bukem, Fat Freddys Drop, De La Soul, Young Disciples, Louie Vega, Kid Koala, LTJ Bukem, Kevin Saunderson, Black Eyed Peas, Minus 8, Runaways, Norman Jay, Russ Dewbury, Mark Rae, Rainer Truby, Gotan Project, Jose Padilla, Bugz in the Attic, Bebel Gilberto, Joe Bataan, Lonnie Liston Smith and Gil Scott-Heron to name just a few. In November 2004, Kano was chosen as an Australian representative at the prestigious Red Bull Music Academy in Rome, and was integral in bringing the Academy to Melbourne in 2006. He continues to work closely with the Red Bull Music Academy as a consultant, designer and Australian representative.
