I’m sure many are aware of whom you are and what you do, but for those who do not, could you tell them a little bit about yourself?
The majority of my time is spent producing music and also playing gigs at home and abroad. I am based in Wellington New Zealand and have been DJ’ing for 17 years and producing for around 11. I mainly produce dub, hip hop, breaks and drum & bass but also produce and master music for other artists.
How long have you been working on the “Selected Works” album and what are some of your fondest memories while working on it?
The “Selected Works” tracks are predominantly off my previous albums but it has 5 new tracks which were all done in 2007. The track “Breaking Rocks” was one which I enjoyed making because it was made in the studio with two of my good friends - MC ants-man and O.G. It was completed in a day and that always makes it a better experience.
The album sounds great, have you got a secret to how you produce or certain techniques you use while producing your songs?
Thanks…. I have a good studio set up and try to balance the live with the electronic and the analogue with the digital. I guess it also helps to have years of experience and a passion for music.
What are your plans for this album?
I planned this album to coincide with my Australian tour which will be taking place during the end of January. It will be an awesome experience and will include Oakley Grenell (guitar) and Dayna Sanariva (vocals).
I also plan to release this album in New Zealand in March before I release my sixth album in July 2008.
How do you usually prepare for a live gig?
I usually remix the tracks so they sound slightly different and I bring most of my sound gear and equipment with me so I can really mash things up live. I will also pre mix visuals that help to complete the show.
Who is your favourite producer of all time and why?
I don’t really have one favourite producer of all time, but DJ Shadow’s work is impressive. I really like the way he samples and I also his ability to capture a mood.
Your fans must be excited with the new album, have you got anything you want to say to them?
Firstly, thanks so much for all the support – this show is going to blow your socks off, the best is yet to come!
Last but not least, could you give us a sneak peak to what your fans might be expecting from The Nomad in the near future?
Tighter production, more tunes aimed for the dance floor and a lot more touring of Australia. I will also be starting on my next album in the near future too which is exciting.
The Nomad ‘Selected Works’ is out now through AlleyKat Records.
