This week we had the first of what will be a procession of visitors to Stylin that are in Melbourne for the Red Bull Music Academy. Waajeed talked about the importance of Detroit to his music, his Bling 47 empire, ghost production, working on the early releases of Dwele and Slum Village, and his Platinum Pied Pipers project for which he is currently working on a second album. He also gave us a new DJ set which was much more uptempo than his own music, but which he said still reflected many of the influences that go into his production, from Kraftwerk and Detroit Techno to disco, funk and afrobeat. This weeks albums to check are Darien Brockington's 'Somebody to Love' which is like John Legend with better production, Gilles Peterson & Patrick Forge's 'Sunday Afternoon at Dingwalls' compilation of jazz dance classics from their legendary 80s/90s club session, Brazilian Beats Brooklyn which collects no less than 22 Brazilian rarities and the beatscapes of upcoming Stylin guest Flying Lotus' '1983'.
