I couldn't pass on the opportunity to speak with New York latin soul legend (and disco and hip hop pioneer) Joe Bataan, whose career started with some classic mid-60s Fania sides and has continued into the 21st century with collaborations and new releases for Irma and Vampi Soul. He plays at the Espy in Melbourne tonight (Saturday) with a 12-piece band featuring members of the Bamboos and Los Cabrones, as well as his own percussionist and his wife on BVs! The man had stories for days, and I suspect there will be a few more of them told at the show. This week's recommended albums are the neo-60s-soul of Amy Winehouse's 'Back to Black' and yet another Gilles Peterson compilation 'Brownswood Bubblers' (new music this time). The previously recommended 'Food & Liquor' by Lupe Fiasco is now out in Australia and was RRR's album of the week this week so it was good to have some copies to give away live on the show to RRR subscribers.
